An Artist Manager's Dream or Nightmare?

Idolator
Billie Joe, lead singer of Green Day, gave quite the performance at the iHeartRadio Music Festival last week. According to WPTV, Billie Joe’s reaction was in response to his set being cut short during the concert. After throwing around a few f-bombs, Billie Joe went on to smash his guitar on stage, outwardly displaying his anger and frustration. For the past few days, fans have been buzzing about the performance and the allegation that Billy Joe has checked into rehab for substance abuse (Alternative Press).

Green Day  released an official statement on their website days afterward stating that their set at the iHeartRadio Music Festival was not cut short and that Billie Joe is seeking treatment. Billboard reports the possibility of the whole performance being staged, whether or not that is completely true is unknown. From a music business graduate’s standpoint, this whole ordeal could be an artist’s manager’s dream or nightmare.

If Billie Joe’s entire uproar was a marketing strategy to promote the band’s newest album Uno!, it might have worked to generate awareness and to re-engage old fans. If this was the case, it may have worked to also revive the essence of rebellion and anti-authority that the band has been known for since the early 90s. However, this performance, coupled with Billie Joe’s timely check-in to rehab might undermine the marketing strategy (if one ever existed). Fans are curious to what underlying causes there might have been to produce such a reaction to his 1 minute warning at the music festival and what substances (if any) were involved. Of course, it’s still possible that Billie Joe was just overreacting or reacted due to his substance abuse. Perhaps there is no deeper meaning and the singer was just very upset that he couldn’t perform longer for his fans.

For an artist manager, that’s a lot of explaining to do. Having a client in the entertainment industry, it is ideal for them to have a clean record. Imagine how much work the manager of Tiger Woods and Michael Vick had to do when the celebrities each had their scandals. This is one of the reasons why endorsement deals have morality clauses in contracts with celebrities. Well-known companies do not want to be affiliated with celebrities that have questionable behavior so these clauses allow the companies to terminate the agreement.

Regardless of Billie Joe’s behavior in the past week or so, Green Day’s album Uno! has sold quite a bit of copies. The purchasing behavior of real fans will not change due to the past week’s issues, though it might hinder the purchasing of the album for new fans, perhaps until they have more answers about the band. 1. I believe that whether this was a dream or nightmare completely depends on the artist and genre of music. If this had been Kanye West, than this would have surely been a nightmare. However, this was the iconic punk band Green Day. The only problem was that he wanted to perform longer for his fans. He was upset that pop artists such as Rihanna and Justin Bieber were granted a longer set then his band which had been around forever.Because of Green Day's success, many fans were beginning to say that they went soft and they were no longer edgy or punk rock. Many were accusing the band of turning too pop. In my opinion Billie Joe does not appear intoxicated in this video. I believe that the timing and subject of this rant were perfect. Billie Joe was making a statement saying that he wanted to bring the edge and rebellion back to Rock and Roll. It was refreshing to see something like that in a musical industry dominated by over glorified dancers who have made a career through lip synching.
