Palm Kids' New EP

Palm Kids is a three piece alternative rock band based out of California. Having formed in February of last year, the band already has a following on several social networking sites including Facebook and Twitter. They are known for their upbeat tempos, melodic intricacies, and catchy choruses.
Their newest EP entitled “Somehow,” really showcases their diverse sound and the talents of each member. The first track, Dance With Me begins with what sounds like angsty vocals but the song really develops to be more uplifting in the chorus, all the while retaining the right amount of edginess throughout the entire piece. Palm Kids seems to have just a little hint of The Matches, another alternative band from California that signed with Epitaph Records in the past.

Another attention grabbing track is Somehow. The song really is fantastic from beginning to end. With a slower tempo, strong emotional vocals, and amazing guitar solo, it seems to have everything a listener could ever want. Somehow is, in my opinion, their best song. The Palm Kids’ newest EP can be downloaded for free through Bandcamp.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Kyle Smith, the bassist of Palm Kids to learn more about the band and their future. When asked about the main focus of Palm Kids, Smith reported that they’re trying to perfect their sound and build a loyal fan base. Honing in on a specific sound and genre of music all while developing a strong, recognizable brand is tough work for independent musicians. With technology, it has been argued that marketing and promotion has become easier but when millions of bands are utilizing the same platforms and targeting the same individuals, it’s hard to stand out. I asked Smith to describe the live performance scene in Fresno to get a better understanding of how the industry is on the west coast.

There are lots of places to play but hard to draw a crowd. On any given night there are 7 or 8 places having live music with 3 or 4 live bands for a general cover of $5. It makes it hard to stand out... I guess it's a good reflection of the music industry right now.”  Networking with fans at these live performances is definitely a way to take advantage of the opportunity; fans are more likely to remember the bands they meet then the ones they do not.

As for the future of Palm Kids, they are currently in the process of mastering their 2nd EP, which could possibly turn into their first full-length album.

Although they remain unsigned, it doesn’t seem hinder their motivation of reaching as many people as possible.

“Right now we are just focused on making great music and sharing it with great people. If a label hears us and likes what we're doing and wants to help us make some money... that's cool. But the industry has changed and there are so many different avenues to take now. Whatever helps us share our music with the most people and live the most comfortably from it.” Kyle Smith has a great attitude towards the future of the music industry. Right now it might not be the best industry to be in, but when you’re doing something you love, it doesn’t matter as much. But until then, Palm Kids is excited to be sharing the stage with bands including Relax Reload, Euphoria, and The White Glove Service
